"Standoff Kuleshov" is a short film re-enacting exploring two "effects" of cinematic language, the Kuleshov Effect and Einstein's interruption of time. "Standoff Kuleshov" takes these elements and creates a comedic twist on the iconic climactic scene in Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966).
Among the tall trees and mountains of the Far West, a father, son and daughter dwell peacefully in their mountain cabin, close to nature, seldom hearing of the great restless world outside, happy in their isolation. Jack, the son, visiting town on business, is tempted into a gambling saloon and takes part in a game of cards. Dalton, a gambler, undertakes to fleece the boy. The result is a fight in which Dalton is shot, and Jack becomes a fugitive.
Cletus Abernathy, a profiteering, washed-up, sheriff must call upon his past training as a deputy in order to face a man named Crenshaw later in the morning.
Willie Clever, city born and bred, having been spoiled with plenty of money, thinks he knows it all, or nearly all. His father buys a ranch in Arizona and sends Willie out to run the business. He comes with "all the fixin's," and has not been on the place an hour before he tries to run, or reform the outfit. The cowboys decide he needs some experience.
Silas Kendall, a prospector, and his daughter Nell, so the story goes, are prospecting in the mountains, a few miles above Canyon City, a little western town, and the basis of supplies for the hundreds of more or less successful gold prospectors. Kendall has built him a cabin and he and his daughter, a robust little woman, have managed to eke out a living, always hopeful some day of making the "big strike."
Jim Reed, an outlaw, holds up a stagecoach, but is seen by a horseman, who hastily rides to the sheriff's office and shortly after, the sheriff and posse are in pursuit. Finding the trail of the desperado they follow him through a dense woods on the mountainside before he is aware that he is being pursued. He easily eludes them and comes across a miner's hut.
The sheriff is in love with a beautiful widow. The widow has a brother who is in secret a rascal and a member of a gang of bandits. The sheriff and the widow have arrived at an understanding and she is wearing his ring. One day four masked men ride into the village, loot the bank, terrorize the community and ride away with a big sack of gold. The sheriff goes in pursuit, and after a lot of shooting, fast riding and acrobatic horsemanship, the bank looters are caught. When the masks are removed, the sheriff discovers to his consternation that the brother of the handsome widow is the chief of the band. Duty stares at him with unsmiling face.
