Wilton Shaw, a young author, has been advised by his physician to go west for his health and the opening scenes of this picture finds him in a little town in Montana, seeking board and lodging. Jim Walker, a backwoodsman, offers him a home with him and his wife, and he accepts. Arriving at the rough hut of the Walkers, Shaw is introduced to Walker's wife.
Marjorie Wayne, the new school-teacher, comes to town and boards at the same ranch where Broncho Billy is foreman. Broncho Billy falls in love with her winsome ways and proposes to her. She tells him she does not love him, but expresses a wish that they be good friends. Her sweetheart from the city comes to the ranch and she marries him, much to the chagrin of Broncho Billy.

When Dick returns to the ranch, he learns that he has been fired as the result of a mysterious stranger's testimony. Dick goes to the bunkhouse and sacks out; while asleep, he dreams that at Bob's request he has faked a suicide in order to avoid paying his debts.

Jeremy Dice, a finisher in a New York East Side tailor shop who prides himself on being a smart dresser and dancer, proves to be cowardly when he retreats from a bully who gets fresh with his girl, and his employer discharges him. Deciding to go out west, Jeremy is caught hitching the rails and comes upon two outlaws in the desert disputing over booty; they are both killed in a shoot-out, and Jeremy is proclaimed a hero by the sheriff.....

Tom Merry, a stagecoach driver, is in love with Vicky, daughter of Henderson, superintendent of the Eagle Mining Company. Henderson does not approve of his daughter's choice. Jordan, who works in the office, proposes to Vicky, is refused and when Jordan becomes insulting, Henderson discharges him. Jordan incites the men to a riot at the mining company's office and plans with two others, to hold up the stage which Tom drives, on his return trip and get the payroll.
