Made in Japan was recorded live over three nights during 15–17 August 1972 at Festival Hall, Osaka and at Budokan, Tokyo, Japan. Four of the tracks come from the album Machine Head which had been released earlier that year. The album was at first seen as somewhat unimportant by the band members, and only Roger Glover and Ian Paice showed up to mix it. The release in the US was delayed, until April 1973, because Warner Bros. wanted to release Who Do We Think We Are first. The three concerts recorded were later released as Live in Japan 3-CD box set (1993). According to the liner notes for that set, unlike many live albums, there are no overdubs or studio additions to the original album.

One night, following a concert and what initially looks like a random barroom altercation, Angelot falls into a deep coma, during which occurs a flashback through time, detailing the roots of his derailment.
After the death of his Russian mother, nine-year-old orphan Peter lives with Professor Hartmann and his daughter Helga, who cares for him like a mother. Peter is very musical. Kamalpur-based Khular family make a lot of sacrifices to get their daughter and eldest son married; as well as ensure their youngest, Himmat, gets a good education in Patiala's Punjabi University. After Himmat completes his education and returns home, the family even arrange his marriage with an America-based wealthy bride so that he can re-locate abroad and live a better life. The family's peace and harmony is shattered, the house gets divided, after Himmat refuses to marry the bride, and instead sets off with his friends to open a lowly Dhaba. He also starts wooing Resham, the wealthy daughter of Deep Singh, the President of Punjab Hotel Association - who will never permit her to marry a lowly Dhaba owner, and is already making plans to get her married to someone very wealthy.
Petros, a race car driver and son of a construction mogul, hears about an island with promising business opportunities. He tells his father, they have to buy land there but Flora, a night club owner also learns about it and arrives at the island before him. Their competition disturbs the peaceful lives of the island's residents. Marina, the daughter of the local restaurant owner falls in love with Petros while Flora charms the men of the island and especially Nicolas, causing his fiance's jealousy. She on the other hand falls for Iasonas, the son of the island's Lady who worries about the outcome of these events.
